William J. Link, PhD
Chairman of the Board, Glaukos Corporation
Managing Director, Versant Ventures
William J. Link, PhD, has a proven record of building and operating large, successful medical product companies. He has extensive knowledge of medical devices and drug delivery, particularly in ophthalmology. His operating experience spans more than 23 years in general management in the healthcare industry. Perhaps his greatest operational success was as Founder, Chairman and CEO of Chiron Vision, a subsidiary of Chiron Corporation, specializing in ophthalmic surgical products. The company was later sold to Bausch & Lomb in late 1997 for $310 million. Prior to his success with Chiron Vision, Dr. Link founded and served as the President of American Medical Optics, a division of American Hospital Supply Corporation, which was sold to Allergan, Inc. in 1986 for $165 million. Before entering the healthcare industry, Dr. Link was an Assistant Professor in the Department of Surgery at the Indiana University School of Medicine. Prior to cofounding Versant Ventures, he was a General Partner at Brentwood Venture Capital, where he invested in several early-stage companies, including C & C Vision (private), EndiCOR Medical, Inc. (private), FeRx (private), Genyx (private), IntraLase Corporation (private), IntraTherapeutics, Inc. (sold), Refractec, Inc. (private), and Theracardia, Inc. (private). Dr. Link earned his BS, MS and PhD degrees in mechanical engineering from Purdue University. In February 2002, Dr. Link was named Engineer of the Year by the Orange County Engineering Council.
Thomas Burns
President and CEO, Director, Glaukos Corporation
Mr. Burns has provided the leadership for Glaukos since its founding in 2001 to create the premier device franchise in glaucoma treatment– a business that was recently ranked #19 by the Wall Street Journal in a review of approximately 6000 venture-backed companies. He is a leader in the ophthalmic industry having built substantial value, delivered rapid growth and created entirely new commercial product classes and global markets in senior leadership roles at three major, successful start-up companies.
Prior to Glaukos, Mr. Burns led Eyetech (acquired by OSI Pharmaceuticals Inc.) as President & Chief Operating Officer, Director and raised $108M in a final private placement round to prepare the business for a successful $157M initial public offering. Mr. Burns was a co-founder of Chiron Vision and, as Sr. Vice President and GM, helped build that business from a start-up to a successful $310 million acquisition by Bausch & Lomb in 1998. He has had the privilege of leading world-class teams to create new commercial global markets by introducing entirely new market-classes in ophthalmology: the first foldable intraocular lenses, the first LASIK keratome, the first intraocular ophthalmic drug delivery implants (Vitrasert®), the first preservative-free artificial tears (Celluvisc® and Refresh®), the first, foundational, customized LASIK technologies and the first MIGS (micro-invasive glaucoma surgery) implants to treat open-angle glaucoma. As a leading serial entrepreneur, Mr. Burns has raised a quarter billion dollars to date in private placements to build successful businesses. Mr. Burns received his bachelor’s degree in history from Yale University.
Olav B. Bergheim
Founder and Managing Director, Fjord Ventures
Olav B. Bergheim has more than 30 years of experience in creating and managing life science companies. Mr. Bergheim’s vast experience includes almost 20 years in general management at Baxter Healthcare where he was the Corporate Vice President and President of the $700 million Cardiovascular Group. This group is now known as Edwards Lifesciences, LLC. Prior to his leadership of the Cardiovascular Group, Mr. Bergheim was the President of Immunotherapy Worldwide, the President of BioTech Europe, and the President of Baxter Germany. After leaving Baxter, Mr. Bergheim became a General Partner at the venture capital firm Domain Associates, LLC. During his tenure at Domain, Mr. Bergheim participated in forming several companies, including Glaukos Corporation. Mr. Bergheim is the Chairman of the Board at Volcano Corporation, Orqis Medical, and Symphony Medical. He is also a board member of 3F Therapeutics, Inc., Vascular Architects, Inc., Glaukos Corporation, DiObex, Inc., Cadence Pharmaceuticals, Inc., and Verus Pharmaceuticals, Inc.
Nathan Every, MD, MPH
General Partner, Frazier Healthcare Ventures
Nathan Every, MD, MPH, is a Cardiologist who has been with Frazier Healthcare since 1999. He became a Partner in 2001 and a General Partner in 2005. Dr. Every is responsible for evaluating opportunities in the medical device and biotechnology sectors. He had an integral role in the formation of Synecor, LLC, a first-of-its-kind accelerator company that was backed by researchers, corporations, clinicians, and a leading investment bank. He founded MacuSight, an ocular disease therapy company that was incubated at Frazier Healthcare, and he was the start-up CEO for the company. Dr. Every currently serves on the board of directors at BARRX Medical, Inc., Calibra Medical, Inc., FlowCardia, Inc., InnerPulse, Inc., MacuSight, PowerVision, Inc., Xoft, Inc, and Zeltiq Aesthetics, Inc. He is also an observer on the board of directors at Endocare, Inc. and Glaukos Corporation. In the past, Dr. Every has served on the board of directors at Biostent, Inc., and Synecor, LLC.
Prior to joining Frazier Healthcare, Dr. Every was an Associate Professor of Medicine and the Director of the Cardiovascular Outcomes Research Center (CORC) at the University of Washington, where he performed multiple studies evaluating the costs and outcomes of new procedures and pharmaceutical agents. His findings have been published in more than 75 scientific articles, in journals such as The New England Journal of Medicine, The Journal of the American Medical Association, and The Lancet. Dr. Every earned his MD from Emory University School of Medicine and his MPH from the University of Washington School of Public Health and he is board certified in internal medicine and cardiovascular medicine.
Chau Q. Khuong
Private Equity Principal, OrbiMed Advisors
Chau Q. Khuong joined OrbiMed Advisors, LLC, in 2003 to focus on biotechnology and medical device investments in both private equity and small capitalization public companies. Mr. Khuong has experience in start-up operations and business development at Veritas Medicine, Inc. and in basic science research at the Yale School of Medicine and at Massachusetts General Hospital. He was a summer Associate in the New Ventures technology transfer group at Columbia University. Mr. Khuong holds a BS in molecular, cellular and developmental biology with a concentration in biotechnology and an MPH with a concentration in infectious disease, both from Yale University. He was actively involved in OrbiMed investments in Arius Research, Inc. (acquired by Roche in 2008), Peninsula Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (acquired by Johnson & Johnson, Inc., in 2005), Cerexa, Inc. (acquired by Forest Laboratories, Inc., in 2007), Adiana, Inc. (acquired by Cytyc Corporation in 2007), Biodel, Inc. (NASDAQ: BIOD) and Emphasys Medical, Inc. Mr. Khuong currently serves on the board of directors at Cerapedics, Inc., and is an observer on the board of directors at Biolex Therapeutics, Glaukos Corporation, and Pieris AG.
Gil Kliman, MD
General Partner, InterWest Partners
Gil Kliman, MD, focuses on investments in life sciences with a special interest in medical devices. He is responsible for a broad portfolio of life sciences companies, including Archus Orthopedics, Epocrates, Inc., Glaukos Corporation, Neuropace Inc., Ophthonix, Inc., and ReVision Optics, Inc. He was one of the early lead investors in IntraLase Corporation, an ophthalmic laser company that went public in 2004 and was acquired by Advanced Medical Optics, Inc. (NYSE: EYE) for $808 million in 2007.
Prior to joining InterWest Partners, LLC, Dr. Kliman was a healthcare investor at TA Associates, Inc. and at Norwest Venture Capital. As a practicing ophthalmologist, he was the former West Coast Director of LCA-Vision, Inc. and he served as an Assistant Professor at Tufts University New England Eye Center. Dr. Kliman received his BA from Harvard University, his MD from the University of Pennsylvania, and his MBA from Stanford University.
Paul Madera
Managing Director, Meritech Capital Partners
Paul Madera was a founder of Meritech in 1999 and focuses on information technology and medical technology and specifically on the social networking, medical device, storage, SaaS, and digital consumer sectors. He has been directly involved with Meritech's investments into Acopia (acquired by F5 Networks), Netsuite (NYSE: N) and Topspin (acquired by Cisco Systems), and led Meritech's investments into 2Wire (acquired by Pace Technologies), Facebook, Homestead Technologies (acquired by Intuit), IntraLase (acquired by AMO), Riverbed Technology (NASDAQ: RVBD) and Salesforce.com (NYSE: SFDC).
Prior to Meritech, Mr. Madera was the Head of Private Equity at Montgomery Securities/Banc of America and he began his career in finance as an investment banker with Morgan Stanley & Co. in New York. Before joining Morgan Stanley, he served in the United States Air Force as an F-16 Instructor Pilot as well as a member of the Air Force Liaison Office and representative to the Senate and House Armed Services Committees.
Mr. Madera holds a B.S. from the United States Air Force Academy and an M.B.A. from the Stanford Graduate School of Business, and currently serves on the Board of Directors of the USAFA Endowment.
Robert J. More
General Partner, Frazier Healthcare Ventures
Robert J. More joined Frazier Healthcare Ventures in 2008 as a General Partner and is a member of the firm’s biopharmaceutical and medical device investment teams. Prior to joining Frazier Healthcare, Mr. More was a Partner with Domain Associates, LLC, having joined the firm in 1996 as a Kauffman Fellow and becoming a Partner in 2000. From 1997 to 1998, Mr. More served as the COO of Small Molecule Therapeutics, Inc., a Domain portfolio company subsequently purchased by Morphochem AG. From 1992 to 1995, Mr. More was a sales professional at Pharmacia Biotech. Prior to joining Pharmacia, Mr. More held a research position at Somatogen, Inc., a company developing a recombinant blood substitute that was subsequently bought by Baxter Healthcare. While attending business school, Mr. More worked with MedVest, an early-stage venture group in Washington, DC.
Mr. More has managed successful investments in and served on the boards of ESP Pharma Inc. (acquired by Protein Design Labs, Inc.), Proxima Therapeutics, Inc. (acquired by Cytyc Corporation), Onux Medical, Inc. (acquired by C.R. Bard, Inc.), NovaCardia, Inc. (acquired by Merck & Co., Inc.), Esprit Pharma, Inc. (acquired by Allergan, Inc.) and IntraLase Corporation (acquired by Advanced Medical Optics, Inc.).
He serves as an advisory board member for Montagu Newhall Associates, Okapi Venture Capital, the Medical Industry Group of the National Venture Capital Association, and the Sulpizio Family Cardiovascular Center. He is also a past founding board member of the Kauffman Fellows Program.
Mr. More received his MBA from the Darden School of Business Administration at the University of Virginia and a BA from Middlebury College.
Jonathan Silverstein, JD

Jonathan Silverstein, JD, joined OrbiMed Advisors, LLC in 1998 to focus on private equity and structured transactions in small capitalization public biotechnology and medical device companies. Mr. Silverstein was a Director of Life Sciences in the Investment Banking Department at the Sumitomo Bank and an Associate at Hambro Resource Development. Mr. Silverstein has a JD and an MBA from the University of San Diego, and a BA in Economics from Denison University. Currently, Mr. Silverstein is the Chairman of Enobia Pharma, Inc., Cerapedics, Inc., and Gelesis, and he is a Director at superDimension, Ltd., Glaukos Corporation and Nxstage Medical, Inc. He has been a Director or observer in more than a dozen other companies, including: LifeCell Corporation, Given Imaging, Ltd., Cerexa, Inc. (sold to Forest Laboratories, Inc.), Peninsula Pharmaceuticals, Inc. Daniel K. Turner III
Managing Director, Montreux Equity Partners
Mr. Turner has 25 years of experience as an entrepreneur, operating manager and venture capitalist. He founded Montreux and has been a General Partner/Managing Member since 1993. Immediately prior to founding Montreux, Mr. Turner was a Principal in the Turnaround Group for Berkeley International. Previously, he was the founding Chief Financial Officer of Oclassen Pharmaceuticals, a specialty pharmaceutical company focused in dermatology, which merged with Watson Pharmaceuticals (NYSE: WPI) in 1997.
Mr. Turner started his career with Price Waterhouse in the high technology group. He holds a B.S. from California State University, Sacramento and attended the M.B.A. program at the Haas School of Business at the University of California, Berkeley, where he has established the Turner Fellowship. Mr. Turner is a Certified Public Accountant.
Mr. Turner is a member of the board of directors of GC Aesthetics, Moksha8, OREXIGEN (NASDAQ: OREX), Renal CarePartners, and Tobira Therapeutics. Mr. Turner previously served as Montreux’s representative to the board of directors of Cerexa (sold to Forest Laboratories, 2007), NovaCardia (sold to Merck, 2007), Peninsula Pharmaceuticals (sold to Johnson & Johnson, 2005). In addition to his activities at Montreux, Mr. Turner is a member of the Advisory Board of the Lester Center at the Haas School of Business at the University of California, Berkeley.
